At GRI Investigative Group, we recently assisted a client who was facing a frightening and dangerous situation. She had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, but he had gone to extreme measures to continue harassing her. We discovered that he had installed a tracker—commonly known as an AirTag, on her car and was tracking her movements to various locations without her consent.

To locate the device, we used our high-technology TSCM equipment, commonly known as a bug sweep, which is specifically designed to detect hidden trackers or surveillance devices on or around a vehicle. This allowed us to pinpoint the tracker quickly and verify that it had been placed without our client’s knowledge, a clear violation of her privacy.

Under California Penal Code § 637.7, it is illegal to intentionally use a GPS or electronic tracking device to determine the location of someone else without their knowledge or consent. In this case, the ex-boyfriend was clearly violating both the restraining order and California law regarding unauthorized GPS tracking.

Once we identified the tracker, our team conducted discreet surveillance on the ex-boyfriend to document further violations. Over several days, we observed multiple instances where he followed our client or attempted indirect contact, all in violation of the restraining order. Every observation was carefully recorded, including dates, times, and locations, creating a detailed, verifiable record.

After completing the investigation, we turned over all evidence to the client’s attorney, including reports and documentation from the TSCM sweep and surveillance. This allowed the attorney to take appropriate legal action, enforce the restraining order, and pursue additional protections under California law.

At GRI Investigative Group, we understand how stressful and frightening situations like this can be. Our team brings decades of investigative and law enforcement experience, handling sensitive cases with professionalism, discretion, and accuracy. Whether it’s detecting hidden trackers, documenting harassment, or gathering evidence for court, we are dedicated to protecting our clients and supporting their legal teams.

Bottom line: If you are dealing with stalking, harassment, or restraining order violations, having an experienced private investigator on your side can make a real difference. With GRI Investigative Group, you gain skilled investigators who know how to safely, legally, and effectively uncover hidden surveillance, document violations, and provide your attorney with the actionable evidence needed to protect your rights and safety.
